RUNNER IN A TRUCKER HAT ......
It all began with a 5-mile run where I had to beat the
bridge while chasing down a man in a banana suit. I sit here today in my trucker hat and
aviators, typing and resting my body for a 50 mile run in Crystal Mountain with
14,000 feet elevation change. How did
any of this even come about? Well…that’s
an interesting and unexpected story….
I was always a go-go-go overachieving type, athletic and pre-med with honors in college, but married young and had 2 unplanned daughters-yikes! Five moves (in five years) later with a family I hungered for more….but what was it? I was a gym rat, which led me to a fitness challenge involving an 800m run, which led me to the 5 mile Nordstrom Beat the Bridge race and the man in a banana suit. It was hard and I beat the bridge. I finished euphoric. A marathon was over five times the distance…hmmmmm…
Dear body, we are now training for a half marathon. In my naïve brain, a 13 mile run for a few weekends in a row was great training for a half marathon. Dear body, I will run these training runs as fast as I can without water. Dear body, after the half marathon I will decide to train for a marathon and you have 6 weeks. Dear body, sorry, but the Portland Marathon in 2009 was fun, but you still needed to use your friend as a crutch to hobble back to the hotel…I apologize, but dear body….I think I’m addicted to this insane running thing.
I am Marathon Maniac #3397. 42 marathons and ultra-marathons later I have lived and experienced so many highs, lows, anemia, sprains, fatigue, high-fives, tears, illness, balancing family, side stitches, new friends, honey badgers, mountains, mud, relays, roads, physical therapists, massage therapists, body glide, gels, chomps, chafing, walking across finish lines, sprinting across finish lines…and LOTS OF SHOES. Everything from a 5k to a 50 miler, all I can say is try it ALL.
My running has brought me my best friends and reignited my fire. I felt lost, but now I can say I feel more grounded in my life than ever. It was a shift to go from studying for medical school, to being a stay home mom of 2 amazing girls, now 5 and 9. Running landed me a gig to model for Brooks Running, I was recently interviewed for the Marathon Maniacs in the Tacoma Tribune, I raced Germans while on a cruise in the Caribbean, and I coach with the fantastic Fleet Feet family.
It’s hard to sum it all up…this barely scratches the surface. I plan to continue to share my tidbits, opinions and experiences right here. Oh…and in the meantime…you can find this honey badger “running all over the place” in my trucker hat and aviators.
